Othello description

Enter the intimate confines of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as Shakespeare’s blistering tragedy, Othello, is laid bare by candlelight this winter.

Othello, the General. Othello, the hero. Othello, the husband.

Othello, the Black man.

Praised by everyone, Othello has carved a successful career for himself. Until one man’s unrestrained jealousy and deceitful manipulation starts a fire that corrodes not only Othello’s reputation, but his own sanity as well.

Othello, the target. Othello, the enemy. Othello, the murderer.

Following 2021’s Romeo & Juliet (★★★★ ‘bold, clever, energetic’, The Guardian) in the Globe Theatre, Director Ola Ince debuts in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse with Shakespeare’s confronting look at the destructive impact of racism that asks: How do we respond to Black success? And what does it mean for accomplished Black men to be torn down by the society that initially lauded them?

Othello is part of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse 10th anniversary season.

But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve For daws to peck at: I am not what I am. Act I, scene 1
